Teresa Nehra passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026. She was born on January 6, 1925, in a small village North of Beirut, Lebanon to Antounios and Sayedi Yamouni. Her beloved sister RoseAnn was born 2 years later. Their father died of pneumonia when they were toddlers. Teresa and her sister emigrated to Harrow, Ontario, at the behest of their paternal grandmother. They were then raised by Uncle Simon and Aunt Nora. Teresa often recalled the memory of seeing Mount Etna erupting from the ship that carried them toward their new life. Her mother remained in Lebanon and started a new family with 3 additional children.
Teresa's early life was a testament to resilience and devotion. Teresa thrived in Canada and ultimately was educated at Saint Mary's boarding school in Windsor. In 1946, she married the love of her life, John M. (Monte) Nehra. At their initial meeting, John asked Teresa for her number. She famously told him, "You can look it up". They had 3 children within 24 months. Tony, John, and Rose DeAnne. While John was completing his residency, Teresa, with the help of Nora and Sam, was able to manage a bustling household of 3 young children and welcome Paul 4 years later. A resident of Grosse Pointe for over 60 years, Teresa was the ultimate homemaker. Whether she made classic Lebanese dishes or American fare, her kitchen was the heart of the home. Her cousin Robert often remarked, "Teresa, you did it again". Teresa and RoseAnn were known for their love of shopping and fashion. They were always put together perfectly, whether going to church, a school function, or a social engagement.
In 1987, when John retired, they spent half the year in the Mariner Sands in Stuart, Florida. Teresa always put her family first. She nourished them with love, kindness, care, and compassion. Teresa was preceded in death by her husband, John, and daughter DeAnne. She is survived by her three sons, Tony (Carlene), Johnny (Susan), and Paul (Jane Ann), her sister-in-law, Priscilla Nehra, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren: Terese, Lauren, Anthony, Katie, Clare, Annie, Mary Elizabeth, and Kate. She had 6 great-grandchildren: John, Charlotte, Oliver, Van, Max, and Paul.
Lois Murdock has been an incredible caregiver and friend to John and Teresa since 2017. Teresa was an incredible beacon of selflessness. She was a woman of faith and a believer in the Roman Catholic tradition. Teresa was truly for others.
A service will be held for Teresa on Sunday, May 24th, at 12:00 pm at St. Christopher’s in Hobe Sound, Florida. Donations can be made in Teresa’s name to The Capuchins and the Liggett Breast Center through the St. John Foundation.
