Scott L. Chapin, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Glenburn, PA, Scott spent most of his life in the Abington area before retiring to Florida in 2000.
Scott was the son of Harold and Patricia (Lister) Chapin. He was a 1959 graduate of Johnson College and proudly served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, where he was stationed in Newfoundland before his honorable discharge in the early 1960s. He served for years as a troop leader for the Waverly Boy Scouts and enjoyed teaching his children to ski at Elk Mountain.
A skilled and respected builder, Scott worked as a general contractor for more than three decades, constructing over 100 homes throughout the Abington area. In 1975, he expanded his professional pursuits by opening Dalton Lumber and Supply Company, later developing it into the Dalton Do-it Center in 1989. He operated both his construction and lumber businesses with integrity and care until selling the Do-it Center in 2000. His vision and energy fueled his success.
In retirement, Scott fully embraced life. An avid and accomplished golfer, he won many tournaments and recorded several hole-in-one shots. He was an active member of the Scranton Canoe Club—serving on the board and as Commodore during the 1990s—as well as Glen Oak Country Club, PGA National Golf Club, Ekwanok Country Club, and Harbor Ridge Yacht and Country Club. He also loved to travel, exploring six continents by both land and sea, with his beloved wife Donna by his side.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Fran (Bartz) Chapin; his second wife, Barbara Weber Chapin; his son, Scott W. Chapin; and his stepson, Jeffrey Saunders.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Donna Garneau Chapin; his brothers Byron (Becky) of Chattanooga, TN, James L. (Pat) of Blackwood, NJ; Neil (Donna) of Gainesville, FL; his sister, Joyce Kuzmick (Steve Prieur) of Sun City Center, FL; his children Todd (Pam) of Deland, FL, Kevin (Assunta) of Waverly, PA, Audra Walsh (William) of Havertown, PA, and Eric (Elizabeth) of Ashley, PA; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Harris (Rob) of Chula Vista, CA; 12 grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Stuart, FL, on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place at a later date at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997, or Johnson College, College Advancement, 3427 N. Main Avenue, Scranton, PA 18508.
