Raul Castro

Raul was 88 years old and was born in La Grulla, Tx. He was one of six children born to Jose and Micaela Castro. In his younger years, his family were migrant workers, following the crops as they tried to make a living. He married his wife Rita Flores in Texas. The family eventually settled in Lepanto, Ark. He became a farmer and started his family. But as the family grew, he realized that a farm laborer living in Arkansas during the 1960’s meant certain poverty.

His parents had moved to Florida to work the crops. He followed to Florida but settled in Martin County. A family member was running a cattle ranch in Hobe Sound, so he got a job with him and became a rancher. Raul was one of the original volunteer firefighters for Hobe Sound. That was one of the ways he gave back to his community.

When the ranch was sold, he started work for Martin County Environmental Services, where he worked for 22 years before retiring due to a work-related disability. For several years, Raul operated a fruit stand on Cove Road and later moved his business to Commerce, where he worked and lived.

Raul was predeceased by his Wife Rita, his sisters Melida Winger and Rosa White, his brother Jose Castro, and his daughter Mary Ann Frier. Raul is survived by his brother, Trinidad Castro, and his sister, Olga Garcia. His children include Ernestina Holton, Ramona Daily, Margaret Castro, Raul Castro, Jr., and Chavon Hazelton. He is further survived by 9 Grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 2 Great Great-Grandchildren.

Raul’s funeral service will be held at 11 am, Monday, April 20th, at Martin Funeral Home & Crematory located at 961 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart, FL 34994. Interment will follow at White City Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
