Makena Maehara, 28, of Stuart, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, peacefully in his sleep in Orlando, Florida. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and brought joy and kindness to all who knew him.
Makena's passion for politics, love for comics, and enthusiasm for video games and reading were central to his vibrant personality. He was known for his kindness to strangers, generosity, and forgiving nature, traits that endeared him to his family and friends.
During his short life, Makena explored the world and lived many diverse places broadening his horizons. He had aspirations of becoming a writer and working with the homeless.
He is survived by his loving mother, Carolyn Alex Sancilio, and step-father, Fred D. Sancilio, both of Stuart, Florida. Makena is also survived by his half-siblings: Tasha Maehara of Australia, Elizabeth Maehara of California, Charlene Mariner of Florida, and Ryan MacDonald of Georgia. His step-brothers, Ryan and Chris Sancilio, both of Florida, and his Aunt Helen Anda of Washington, also mourn his loss. Makena was predeceased by his father, Eric Maehara.
Makena will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a cherished son, brother, nephew, and a young man of compassion and kindness.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate Makena's life will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Andrew Catholic Church, located at 2100 SE Cove Road, Stuart, Florida.
Makena is laid to rest at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in West Palm Beach, FL.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in loving memory can be made to Amnesty International (where he had work), or by planting a tree in his honor.
