Linda Mae Volckmann, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 6th, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on April 26, 1938, in Yakima, Washington, she was the daughter of Everett and Ila Terril. Linda's lifelong love of learning led her to Stanford University, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Master's degree in Teaching.
On June 19, 1965, she married Carl Volckmann, beginning a loving partnership that would span more than six decades. As Carl's career with IBM took the family throughout the Northeast—an experience Linda jokingly referred to as "I've Been Moved"—they eventually settled in Westport, Connecticut, in 1974.
Westport became home in every sense of the word. There, Linda developed a love of sailing alongside her Navy husband, formed many lifelong friendships, and devoted countless hours to supporting her children's athletic, music and academic pursuits. She could be found at swim meets, tennis matches, and horseback riding competitions, and later cheering from the sidelines of soccer and lacrosse games or sitting in crowded gyms for Eric's wrestling matches. No matter the event, Linda was there—encouraging, supporting, and celebrating those she loved.
Linda was a gracious hostess and an exceptional cook whose home was always open to family and friends. Her thoughtfulness was legendary; she even maintained a file recording guests' favorite drinks, dietary restrictions, allergies, and meals she had previously served so that everyone who visited would feel welcomed and cared for.
She loved to travel and often spoke fondly of adventures throughout Asia and Africa. Her curiosity about the world, appreciation for different cultures, and eagerness to learn enriched her life and inspired those around her.
When their children were grown, Linda and Carl found a second home in the community of Mariner Sands in Stuart, Florida, where many cherished friends from graduate school had settled. For nearly two decades they enjoyed life as "snowbirds," creating treasured memories and lasting friendships. After selling their beloved Westport home of 43 years, they divided their time between Park City, Utah, and Mariner Sands, enjoying the best of both communities
More than anything, Linda's greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Carl; her daughter Karin Goodman and husband Nick, and their children Kendall, Hayden, and Camden; her daughter Tina Perala and husband Matthew, and their children Kai and Teo; and her son Eric Volckmann and his children Evelyn and Emmett. Linda is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Lynne Terril, and their children Christopher and Laura; by her sister, Lila Nielsen, and her children Gretchen and Vicki and her nieces Kristen Doerrer, Eryn Cusic and Micheal Cusic .
She was blessed with many friends and close family and will be missed by all. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched and in the family she cherished above all else.
Linda will be remembered for her intelligence, generosity, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome, valued, and loved. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew her
Tentatively, a memorial service will take place at the end of the year. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations to be directed to either Greens Farms Congregational Church of Westport, CT, Mariner Sands Chapel Benevolence Fund, or Make -A-Wish of Seattle (Alaska & Washington chapter).
