We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Johnathan Rivers Monroe Barrick. John, 41 passed unexpectedly, on May 1, 2026 in Palm City, FL.
John was born in Tallahassee, FL on March 30, 1985, to parents Cheryl Sloat and James Barrick. When John was two years old, he and his mother relocated to Boca Raton where they lived until 1997. When John was 11, they moved to Stuart. He attended Redeemer Lutheran School, in Stuart, FL for his late elementary and middle school years. He continued on and graduated from Martin County High School.
Following high school graduation, John started a pressure-washing business and took on side jobs installing sound systems in cars. He was extremely entrepreneurial, very clever and crafty. One of his most memorable gadgets was his ‘gator catcher’ that he made by putting a cable wire through a long PVC pipe, tying it into a loop and catching the gator. John’s family warm-heartedly describe him as ‘always on the move.’
John spent many happy summers with relatives at the family cottage on Lake Erie, in Canada. They swam, fished, rode wave runners and enjoyed campfires on the beach. This was one of John’s favorite places.
John had several careers throughout his life, including working with his uncles for the family business, Napa Auto Parts. His favorite position was as a land surveyor- he loved being able to work outdoors. In recent years, John helped the family by moving in with his grandfather and assisting with his care. Later, he assisted his Aunt Becky with chores and taking her to run errands.
When he wasn’t working, John loved spending his free time playing video games. Through his gaming, he made many world-wide on-line friends.
John is survived by his son Logan Barrick, 18, a recent graduate of Martin County High School and his dog, Bane. He also leaves behind his loving mother, Cheryl Sloat, of Palm City, FL; his two maternal aunts, Rebecca Davies and Sandra Bryla; and his nine cousins and their children.
His loving smile and cheerful personality will be greatly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held for Johnathan at Palm City Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 30th at 11:00am. (2700 SW Martin Hwy, Palm City, FL 34990).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in John's Memory to The Salvation Army https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/fl/stuart/
