Christine "Chris" E. Meier

In Loving Memory of Christine Meier

Christine (Chris) Moore was born in Cornwall, England, during the Second World War to Herbert and Phyllis Mary Moore of Par, later of St. Austell. She was the older of two children; her beloved brother, Alan James Moore, sadly passed away in 1986, just one day before his 40th birthday.

A gifted student, Chris excelled academically - skipping several grades and graduating at the equivalent of U.S. high school by age 14. Since college in England began at 17, she spent the interim years studying Latin and modern languages. Ultimately, she chose to support her family financially by working at the National Provincial Bank in St. Austell.

At 21, she married fellow banker T.F. Roberts. Seeking better opportunities and a change from England’s bleak economy and weather, they moved to Nigeria. Chris thrived there, working for a Syrian importer, the Syrian Embassy, and later for Texaco in Lagos. She spent five vibrant years in Nigeria, living through riots, civil war, a military coup, and an evacuation. Though the marriage ended, her time in West Africa remained a defining chapter of her life. At her daughters’ urging, she later chronicled those years in her memoir, It’s Hell on the Coast, which was even professionally published and available on Amazon!

After brief stays in Beirut and London, Chris relocated to Florida in 1971, where she worked for the developer of Four Rivers in Martin County. When Texaco opened an office in Coral Gables, she rejoined the company for a time before returning to Martin County. In 1973, she married Pete Meier, and they settled in Stuart on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. Their daughter Lisa was born in 1974, followed by Lori in 1976 - the same year Chris proudly became an American citizen.

Chris was a dedicated entrepreneur, running her own secretarial and bookkeeping business for many years. She was also one of the earliest advisors for the founding of the Stuart YMCA, where she continued to serve for many years. Her love of travel took her across the globe, including a memorable family trip around the world in 1989.

Her daughters grew into hardworking, successful women. Lisa married John Bagocius, and Lori married Erik O’Keefe. Each couple has two children: Lisa’s sons, John and Ben, and Lori’s daughters, Natalie and Kaia. Chris adored her grandchildren - they were the light of her life.

Chris was a remarkable woman, deeply loved and admired by many. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope. Her daughter Lisa is fundraising for the organization in memory of Chris and in support of all who are fighting cancer. Donation link: https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/CAHH/team/Lisa
