Dr. Alton (Al) W. Lamont, Jr. passed away on April 25, 2025 at the age of 94. Al was born in Newton, MA, the only child of Alton and Yadviga Lamont. He was raised in the Auburndale section of Newton, attending Newton schools and then going on to Colby College in Waterville, ME. At Colby, Al met Joan Martin, who would become his beloved wife of 68 years.
While at Colby, Al joined the Naval Reserve, where he became a Radar Seaman. He spent seven years as a reservist, eventually earning Q clearance as an undercover security sailor. He loved to tease the family with all the secrets he knew but would never tell. And he never did. After college, Al received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry. He established a private practice in his hometown of Newton, where he treated a devoted following of patients for over thirty years. Al also dedicated his professional skills as an optometrist in the Massachusetts prison system and as a board member of the New England College of Optometry.
Al and Joan raised their two sons, Gary and Jeffrey, in nearby Wayland, MA. They spent many years sharing in athletic and group activities where they had friendly competitions and a lot of laughs. The family enjoyed a vacation home in Sunapee, NH, where they skied, boated and golfed together for many years. In 1985, after Al sold his practice and retired, he and Joan moved to Stuart, FL where they became among the first residents of the Fairways community at Mariner Sands. For many happy years, they divided their time between NH and FL, before eventually moving permanently to Mariner Sands.
Al played football in his secondary school years and through college, and sports of every variety were a lifelong passion, both as a diehard Boston fan and also as an avid participant with a keen competitive spirit. Al and Joan were fixtures on tennis courts, bocce courts, croquet courts, and golf courses in both New
England and FL. They enjoyed many years as active members of Lake Sunapee Country Club, Baker Hill Golf Club, and Mariner Sands Country Club. They also traveled extensively over the years, and their trips with the 200 Club and the “Vailgabonds” were among their favorite times. Playing cards was also a much-loved family tradition, including the family favorite “Pitch,” which never failed to incite joyful and raucous competition and entertainment. In his later years, Al became a passionate bridge player. He made a whole new connection with far-flung bridge players in an online format, which gave him much pleasure as well as many master points. Al truly loved the various communities to which he belonged and was an active participant and cheerleader for them all. Al had a big mouth (his words), a big personality, and a big heart. It seemed like he had friends in every room he entered.
Al and Joan enjoyed their faith communities in different locations, and the Chapel at Mariner Sands became a uniquely special place for fellowship. In his final years, attending Sunday service there was a huge source of comfort for him.
Al was predeceased by Joan, who passed away in 2023. For many years, he was her primary caretaker during her battle with Alzheimer’s. His unfailing dedication and commitment to her well-being were an inspiration to every member of the family. He is survived by his sons, Gary Lamont and wife Kit of La Canada, CA and Jeffrey Lamont and wife Bronwyn of Concord, MA, three grandchildren, Michelle Lawrence and husband Lee, Ryan Lamont and wife Libby, and Evan Lamont and wife Audrey Haque, and two great-grandchildren, Susanna and Macaulay. The family is grateful for the kindness, care, and love given to Joan and Al by numerous caretakers in recent years, as well as by many members of the Mariner Sands community.
